Geography of Raebareli

Raebareli formed a part of the Awadh region of Uttar Pradesh before Independence. The district of Raebareli now lies under Lucknow division of Uttar Pradesh province and forms the 34th largest district of this state, area wise. This land is little irregular in shape with undulating landscapes that has various troughs and elevations at many points.

Location and Boundaries of Raebareli


On the world map, the District of Raebareli lies between 25° 49' to 26° 36' on Northern Latitude and between 100° 41' to 81° 34' in Eastern Longitude. The district of Raebareli has a vast area cover of 4,609 sq km. Though compact and irregular in shape the dimensions of district changes every year due to the course of River Ganga and its action. Even a little change in the stream of river makes significant variation in the area of this territory that is likely to vary every year.

The neighboring tehsils and districts of Raebareli are: Mohanlal Ganj, Lucknow and Haider Ganj of Barabanki. The Eastern frontier is surrounded by Mussafir Khana tehsil, Sultanpur district and Ateha and Kunda tehsils of Pratap Garh district. Towards the West lies tehsil Purwa of Unnao district while the southern boundary has River Ganga flowing through it. There are 5 prominent Tehsils in Raebareli namely: Raebareli City, Lalganj, Dalmau, Unchahar and Maharajganj.

Topography of Raebareli


It has undulating terrain with the crowns as high as 120.4 m above the sea level in North-West while lowlands as low as 86.9 m above sea level in South-East. The two major rivers flowing in Raebareli are the Ganges and the Sai (a territory of Gomti). Ganges forms the South Eastern Border of District at Dalmau Tehsil while Sai River passes from the West of territory.

The entire Raebareli district is divided into 5 main topographical units by various water drainage that are: The Ganga Khadar, Southern Clay Tract, Ganga Upland, Northern Clay Tract and Central Tract (River Sai Upland).

Geology of Raebareli


Raebareli district falls under the very fertile Gangetic-Alluvial plain of North India and thus its geology accounts to any other Gangetic-Alluvial plain. The land is highly fertile with only one mineral found in abundance that is Kankar. This area has high deposits of Reh and Brick earth.

Rivers in Raebareli


The fertile lands of Raebareli are nurtured by two prominent rivers viz., The Ganges and Sai. The Ganges flows for 54 miles in South and is easily navigable by boats of 40 tonnes. The Ganges touches Raebareli at Godumau and leaves at Barua.

River Sai is a territory of Gomti that passes from the West of Raebareli and touches the Southern Border of Old Cantonment area of the city. Sai River leaves Raebareli at Kanhpur in Pargana Salon.

Climate of Raebareli


Raebareli comes under subtropical regions of Uttar Pradesh, India. The climate is extreme during summers and winters while the rainfall here is very sultry. During summers the mercurial level could go as high as 45 to 50 degree Celsius. A little relief could be seen by mid June with rainfall primarily from South Western Winds. It rains from 90 0mm to 1200 mm here from June to September. The winter takes its stance from mid October to November and prevails till March, the air is dry and chilled during these five months and temperature falls to as low as 4 degree Celsius.
